Sony Launches its First 5G Smartphone - the Xperia 1 II
Sony show off its new flagship dubbed the Xperia 1 II (reads Xperia One Mark Two), which made its debut on the company's livestream event. The new flagship arrives with the latest chipset, 21:9 6.5-inch 4K OLED HDR display and 5G support.
As the name suggested, the Xperia 1 II is the successor to the last year Xperia 1. The super tall design remained unchanged, packing a 21:9 CinemaWide 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED (3840x1644) screen. The display features Motion Blur Reduction which Sony claims it is "equivalent to that of a 90Hz display."
This time the triple cameras is positioned on the left side, just like the Xperia 5. The resolutions are unchanged - 12MP main + 12MP ultra-wide + 12MP telephoto, but the new setup brings bigger sensors and faster lenses, as well as feature ZEISS optics with T* (T-Star) anti-reflective coating.
The main shooter of the Sony Xperia 1 II has a large 1/1.7" Exmor RS sensor with Dual-PD AF sensor, OIS and 24mm f/1.7 lens. The ultra-wide angle snapper equipped with a 16mm f/2.2 aperture and 1/2.6" sensor with Dual-PD AF. Then there's the telephoto shooter with 70mm f/2.4 OIS lens and 1/3.4" sensor with PD AF.
In addition, There's also a fourth sensor on the back of the phone, a 3D time-of-flight unit for enhanced zoom, while up front, there's an 8-megapixel f/2.0 selfie camera with 1/4" sensor and an 84-degree field of view. The Xperia 1 II comes with Eye AF from the Xperia 1, it's now capable to do 20 fps burst shooting with AF/AE tracking and 60 times per second AF/AE calculations.
The Xperia 1 II comes with front-facing stereo speakers and it also brings back the 3.5mm headphone jack. Kudos to Sony! Both front and rear glass are covered by Gorilla Glass 6 and the phone is rated IP68/IP65 for water and dust resistance.
The device is powered by the Snapdragon 865 coupled with the 5G modem that works on Sub 6 GHz networks. It paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of expandable storage via microSD card. Juicing all of this is a 4,000 mAh battery with wireless charging support. There's also a fingerprint scanner on the right side of the phone.
The Sony Xperia 1 II will be available in three colours: Black, White and Purple. It runs on Android 10 and will begin shipping from late Spring 2020. Pricing is yet to be announced.
