Samsung Kick off the MWC 2014 with the Gear 2 Smartwatches

Today in Barcelona, the South Korean company announced new Gear smartwatches at Mobile World Congress: the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. Interestingly, Samsung dropping its Galaxy branding in the new smartwatches due to the operating system; the new Gear will be powered by the Tizen, a platform which Samsung has been invested for years.

To recall, the original Galaxy Gear was announced on last year Samsung Unpacked event at IFA - runs on Android and featuring single core 800 MHz CPU. The new Gear smartwatch has some changes in the design, the camera is now built into the watch alongside the IR blaster, which look much better than previous model.

Gear 2
The new Gear 2 sports the same 1.63 inch touchscreen display, a Dual-core 1 GHz processor, 4 GB of internal storage, 512 MB of RAM, 2 MP AF camera, S Voice, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, infrared, IP67 certified dust and water resistant and a 300 mAh battery. Samsung claims that the battery life would last for 2-3 days in a single charge. The new smartwatches also work as standalone music player via bluetooth headset and speaker, and comes with fitness features - heart rate sensor.

Gear 2 Neo
The Gear 2 and its Neo sibling are identical to each other, apart from the absence of camera in the Neo and being lighter (Gear 2 68 g vs Neo 55 g). They'll comes with changeable strap and color options: the Neo available in Charcoal Black, Mocha Grey and Wild Orange, while the Gear 2 available in Charcoal Black, Gold Brown and Wild Orange.

Samsung has scheduled for global release in April and price tag still remains unknown. Stay tuned for the Mobile World Congress to find out more about the Samsung Gear smartwatches.

UPDATE: The Gear 2 is now available in Malaysia with a price tag of RM899.
