Mid-range Smartphones and Tablets Will Be Even Faster with ARM's Cortex-A17 Processor


ARM has announced the latest Cortex-A series mobile processor, known as Cortex-A17. The Cortex-A17 processor aims for mid-range smartphones and tablets, also for Smart TVs and Over-the-top devices.

The 28 nm A17 promises a 60% of performance boost over the Cortex-A9 and scalable up to 4 cores. It also comes with big.LITTLE architecture, supporting 2 GHz+ Quad-core Cortex-A17 processor with Quad-core Cortex-A7 processor. The A17 is also paired with a Mali-T720 GPU, which supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and optimized for Android devices.

Although ARM doesn't disclose the actual release date, we should expect the Cortex-A17 powered mid-range Android smartphone will be appear sometime in second half of 2014 and 2015.
